Located in Hilo, the Big Island’s largest city, is Carlsmith Beach. This beautiful cove is surrounded by lava rock creating calm pools, and is fed at one end by a river supplying cool fresh water currents and lush lagoons.

Large see turtles, or honu fearlessly frequent the pools. Coasting around on the oceans warm swells and the river’s chilly currents, these friendly giants float gracefully amongst swimmers above the sandy sea floor.

The rocky areas are surrounded by grass and palm trees proving shaded areas perfect for picnicking and relaxation.

Picnic tables, public restrooms and showers are available for convenience and the lifeguard is on duty on weekends and holidays.

The cool waters and mild currents make for excellent snorkeling and swimming. Crabs and darting fish can be seen from the rocks while enjoying the warm coastal breezes.

If you find yourself in Hilo on your next trip to Hawaii, be sure to stop at Carlsmith, it’s worth the trip!
