Potato Diet: 3 Days Complete

I have completed three days of the potato diet and these are my experiences.

The plan: Three days of plant-based nutrition shakes for breakfast and potatoes the rest of the day.

Delicious!

Benefits:

  1. No crashes. My energy related to my diet stayed steady. I had no ups and downs and I was able to exercise regularly as I usually do. Any tired feeling I experienced was due to my lack of sleep the night before (due to work, not an empty stomach.)
  2. No starvation. When ever I was hungry, I ate a potato. The only time I got truly hungry was when I forgot to pack enough potatoes to snack on while I was out and about.
  3. Steady blood sugar levels. Even though I was munching on carbs the entire day, I did not experience the typical highs and lows associated with meals consisting of pasta, rice, cereal etc. I was testing my blood sugar frequently, and did very little insulin for correction and none for meals.
  4. No stomach upset. I frequently experience bloating and stomach upset in the afternoon and have turned to aloe vera juice (which works quite well actually) to settle the discomfort. With the potatoes, this was completely unnecessary.
  5. I discovered the joy of simplicity. I consumed purple and red potatoes, and thoroughly enjoyed the sweetness of the purple potatoes and the savor of the salted red potatoes.
  6. Weight loss. I list this last because it was rather insignificant. 2.6 lbs total, and 2.5 lbs of that occurred in the first 24 hours. It is possible that part of the reason I did not lose more weight was that I continued to drink all the beverages I would normally consume, like coffee and wine, although no soda.

Although I would not consider this a benefit, it was quite enjoyable; the looks of confusion I received while explaining to people I was on a potato diet made it all worth it! Overall, I would rate this as a positive experience. It was not nearly as challenging as I thought it would be and I learned valuable information about how my body processes and utilizes complex carbohydrates.
